The Great Indoors

As the fall weather is now here, I've really been wanting to go camping. We (my family) camped a lot growing up. Did the tent thing and then later a trailer but I'm not to sure what it is about camping in the Fall but it sounds just perfect! The weather's nice and the temperature (not to cold, not to hot) makes me all the more, want to be outdoors camping. But then I sit and ponder this over and think, well we 1.) don't own a tent, ha! and then 2.) camping with two kiddos under the age of 3 probably isn't the wises thing for us at this time. I can just imagine how a tent would be because the morning our kiddo wakes up and crawls into bed with us there's usually an elbow or foot to the eye (my eye this would be) and maybe a handslap unintentially to a face (happen to the mister a few times) and well... Nah... maybe when they're bigger. But either way then I thought maybe I can get my fix of camping on indoors. A few cool solutions (2 are even DIY's) and then my friend, Jenny's brilliant idea of a camping indoors!!! These all make me so excited to find some supplies and give indoor camping a try. So do you like camping? What about camping indoors?

So how cool are these illustrations? Awesome, right! I love the Muppets! It brings back some memories as a child with us all watching the Muppets together. Either way these posters were done by artist, Michael De Pippo of Toronto, Canada. I just love them and the styled 1960's feel. The bold colors and simple yet refined graphics. Biscuits & Apple Butter with Lindsay

Hey guys! It's Lindsay from Pussycat Vintage. I am so excited to be guest blogging again over here at Adalou!! I wanted to share my quick biscuit recipe, as well as a delicious apple butter that is perfect for Fall. I hope you enjoy!!

Quick Biscuits
2 cups AP flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 tsp kosher salt
1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
1/3 cup non-hydrogenated shortening
1 cup of milk

  • Preheat the oven to 425 degrees.
  • Combine flour, baking powder, salt and sugar together in bowl.
  • Whisk together. Using a pastry blender, or your fingers, mix shortening into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse meal. Add milk gradually until a sticky dough forms. Pour loose dough onto a heavily floured surface and knead gently, but firmly, until the dough is smooth (about ten to fifteen times).
  • Flour a rolling pin and roll out the dough. The dough should be about the thickness of your thumb. Use a round cutter and cut out biscuits, taking care not to twist as you cut. I prefer not to reuse scraps, but you could push the scraps together once to make more biscuits.
  • Place on an ungreased cookie sheet and bake for ten to fifteen minutes. The edges and tops should be golden brown.

Apple Butter

2 pounds baking apples
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
1 cup of water
brown sugar ( I used about 1/4 cup of sugar per cup of puree)
pinch of kosher salt
1 1/2 teaspoons of cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon of cloves
juice and zest of one small lemon

  • Cut apples into quarters (cores removed) and place in a saucepan. Cover with the water and cider vinegar. Bring to a boil and reduce to a simmer. Cook until the apples are very soft, about thirty minutes. Use a food mill or fine mesh sieve to strain the puree.
  • Place the puree back into a saucepan and add sugar to taste, salt, spices, and lemon juice and zest. Cook over low heat until the mixture is thick and reduced. This could take up to an hour. You can use it immediately, or store in an airtight container. I imagine this will keep for at least a week in the fridge, however this theory has never been tested at my house.

super simple diy gift bow

This past weekend I attended a baby shower and needless to say, I forgot to buy a pretty bow for the top of my gift. After searching thru drawers and not finding anything, I grabbed some ribbon to take a stab at a simple bow myself. I've made more complex bows in the past but this was to be quick, simple and straight forth. My DIY is below for those of you who may have forgotten the bow for your gift too.
Enjoy! xo :) s

weekend finds + the dress that's getting away...

This past weekend I was able to snatch up a few amazing finds. A cute little Nine West purse, I so needed a smaller black purse so this was perfect. A belt just like this one, but in black. A little trivet with a message (can see it better here) just perfect for our on again off again messy home. A frame which I plan to spray paint some crazy color and use in our home, a few Melmac plates, another vintage camera to add to the growing collection.

Now the dresses below.... I stopped into a local vintage specialty shop called Boomerang and paid a bit more than I wanted too but had high hops for these lovelies! The one on the right (red one) had a few split seams so I knew it would need repairing so I was able to talk them down a bit. But the one on the left I'm oh so bummy about. I paid a bitm more for it and I'm in love with this pattern and overall cut (minus the sleeves which I was going to alter) but while at the store I grabbed it on impulse and got home to realize it was tagged wrong. Plus no returns at this store so Poop!!! I tried my best to see if I could maybe let out the side seams or readjust the zipper placement, but after moving the zipper some and still a no go, I decided it is best for me not to wreak this lovely while trying to alter it more and just find it a new loving home. I'm not a huge person (this would best fit a modern 8) I do fit into it, if I can A.) suck it all in while wearing it and B.) stop breathing while wearing it... but I'm sure someone else would comfortably enjoy it. So if you are ever so interested in seeing more pics of this beauty, feel free to message me as I will be soon posting it into the shop.

mini collections : wrist watches

So how many watches can one boy own you must be wondering... well 5 for that matter. Gifted two by uncles, inherited one by an aunt and 2 from the mister and myself and there you have it. Overall these are played with weekly and now as we are practicing reading time (he's doing a great job with digital but the long hands are tricky and we're still learning this) there's even more reason to wear one each day. We love this small collection! Wow, besides wrist watch, I'm noticed a lot of W's in this post. So any guesses which one's worn the most? I'll give you a "W" hint, "Whamm"! Happy Monday friends! xo :) s & w

what i wore to brunch

.

So I have a few more than a few vintage dresses which all need hemming. I'm pretty short (5' 1" if you're oh so curious) so everything falls to the floor where on most, it would hit the shins. Hemming a few of them is actually my project for this evening, after this sweet little post. This morning I had a baby shower brunch (which was fun and filled with yummy food!) though and was having a dilemma with what to wear, so I grabbed the new machine and my trusty scissors and snip snap; this beauty was then altered for the party! And paired up with my newly (literally, last night) purchased shoes and a funky pair of tights. I loved the overall look but the mister thought elsewise, but he still kindly helped me snap a few pictures. Oh and for those of you who haven't seen it yet, yes my hair is tinted green. I'm slowly bleaching my way from dark to light (it's taking a bit cause I'm worried of killing my hair) but hoping to have some mint colored hair in the weeks to come. ;)

before altering it, way to long

dress: laura ashley. thrifted.
tights: leg avenue. purchase locally at boomerrang
shoes: matte grey kathan's by mossimo. target.

WEAR WARE WHERE (21)

.

wear Shoes  //  Link to BUY

hello new friend

So my older machine, a Kenmore, was having a few issues recently. Chugging along as well as she could but not as happily as she once was. She's been making some weird noises lately which I'm not to sure if it's due to her age (almost over 10) or due to the fact she's fallen out of her case on the floor 3x. Poor baby, I know. The locks on the case has gave loose each time and she's taken a few beatings (all in which resulted in my crying poor machine). Either way I called about repairs on the old girl and every place I called they gave me the same quote of 90 bucks, eck!!! After being shocked by the price and adding up things in my head, we decided it was probably time to seek a newer machine. Something a bit updated from my basic model but nothing to over the top, because I still wanted the easy to use option, none of this programming and leave it alone to stitch nonsense. Well after hunting about I found this beauty, the Singer 5500 Fashion Mate and yes she's a bit digital. She's everything I needed plus a little more and now I'm back in business for sewing. Besides the basic stiches she does a few decorative ones... ok maybe a few more than a few but I'm oh so happy with her. So who else out there sews? I know there's a few of you. What sewing machine is your baby?

betty's carrot cake

.

With today being the misters Birthday, I felt it only appropriate to share one of our FAVORITE cake recipes which we made over the past weekend and have been enjoying. Please note this is not my recipe but from the "Betty Crocker's Cookbook". That is our tasty cake photo above though. Which it's all almost gone ;)

The Cake (ingredients)
(Prep time 20 minutes)
1.5 cups sugar
1 cup vegetable oil
3 large eggs
2 cups all purpose flour
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 cups (about 5 medium) shredded carrots (5 carrots)
1 cup chopped walnuts
1 cup chopped pecans (optional)
1 cup raisins (optional)

Cake (directions)
Step 1) Heat oven to 350°F. Grease bottom and sides of one 13x9-inch pan or two 8-inch or 9-inch round pans with shortening; lightly flour.

Step 2) In large bowl, beat sugar, oil & eggs with electric mixer on low for 30 seconds or until blended. Add flour, cinnamon, baking soda, vanilla and the salt; beat on low speed 1 minute. Stir in shredded carrots and nuts. Pour into pan(s).

Step 3) Bake 13x9-inch pan 40 to 45 minutes, round pans 30 to 35 minutes, or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool rectangle in pan on wire rack. Cool rounds 10 minutes; remove from pans to cooling rack. Cool completely, about 1 hour.

Cream Cheese Frosting (ingredients)
1 package (8oz) of cream cheese, softened
1/4 cup butter/margarine, softened
2 to 3 teaspoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
4 cups powdered sugar

Frosting (directions)
Step 1) Beat cream cheese, butter, milk and vanilla in medium bowl with electric mixer on low speed until smooth.

Step 2) Gradually beat in powdered sugar, 1 cup at a time, on low speed until smooth and spreadable. Frost 13x9-inch cake generously or fill and frost 8- or 9-inch round layer cakes. Store in refrigerator.

* Notes - The cream cheese will spoil if left out so you'll need to refrigerate the frosted cake and any left over frosting you may have.

happy birthday ben!

Look at that handsome fellow, oh how I love him, would you believe me if I told you he turns 21 today! Ok maybe not 21, but, it really is his special day. So Happy Birthday to the most wonderful guy ever, my mister, Ben! Who's caring, gentle, handsome, sweet, loving, hilarious and way too much more to list! I feel so truly lucky to have been able to spend 11 amazing birthdays with you so far and I can't wait to spend many more in the years ahead of us! Love you! xo :) s

p.s. Age is just a number, I know you're surely not a day over 14 though, right? ;)

take ten tuesdays : fall footwear

.
I have a hard time buying shoes for myself. As silly as that sounds, I think it's the justification of spending a bit of money on something that gets walked on and just may see a pile of dog poo or be wrecked in the rain before I can fully enjoy them. I love the idea of having multiple styles of shoes but honestly I think I only own 7 pairs (yes, you heard me right) which get their far share of wear. I'm loving all of these shoes below, maybe I should take the plunge and buy more cute shoes for my collection! But with minimal (like zero!) closet space, where would I store such lovelies? xo, :) s

How or where do you store all your pretty shoes?

travels across country... a quick hello!

So my brother is moving to San Diego, and he decided to stop in and say hello along his travels across country. It was so awesome seeing him and his gf for a few days, and though their stay wasn't long enough, I still managed to grab a few snapshots till we meet up again. The weekend was filled with sandbox fun, a trip to Deanna Rose Farmstead, seeing the Foo Fighters in concert (which was AMAZING!) and we enjoyed catching up and hanging out eating some tasty home cooked meals.
Best of Luck you two! We miss you already!  xo :)

Now I can't take any credit for these DIY projects (links under images) as I'm merely spreading some link love and hoping you'll enjoy them all too. I felt these were all so worthy of sharing as they looked beautiful, were all pretty straight forth and simple items to make. These lovelies would surely be fun to style your everyday attire with. Enjoy!

The Ringling Circus (Photos + Video)

.
So last weekend the boy and I went to see the Ringling Brothers, Barnum & Bailey Circus! I hadn't seen the circus since I was a little kid myself and it was such a fun experience I would totally recommend attending one if the circus comes to town. We had popcorn and snacks as we watched the tiger tamer who was first up for perform. I was then told we now need a pet white tiger for our house, ha ha HA! We enjoyed cotton candy and got a silly hat to wear for the show. The motorcyclist and lady on trapeze where very cool as they flipped around the wire and raced all about, but the motorcyclist in the steel cage (video below) were by far his FAVORITE! And he even mentioned he is going to do this when he gets bigger. I guess the mister's next project will be a steel ball, just kidding, but how cool would this be though. People jumping on trampolines where entertaining and the elephants where also a hit. All in all we had an awesome time and are so looking forward to taking miss P next time the circus stops in town. So have you been to the circus lately?

A is for Ampersand! A guest post from Amy!

.
Hello, all you pretty Adalou Vintage readers! I'm Amy from A is for Ampersand, and I'm absolutely delighted to be guest posting on Sandi's adorable blog. I've been a fan of Sandi for awhile, so I'm so honored to be here.

Sandi and I share a similar predilection for all things vintage, and I'm a firm believer that vintage is pretty and pretty good FOR you. In fact, I dare you to wear a vintage piece and try and feel bummed about life. Nope. Can't do it. Vintage is good for your soul. I'm sure of it.

Because I love vintage so much, I thought I'd show you how easy it is to bring one little vintage piece into all 4 seasons.

header

Yes, I believe that vintage is for all seasons. The best part about wearing vintage is just how easy it is to add a couple of different accessories and get a whole new outfit.

This little strawberry number was a $1 muumuu I found on a thrifting venture. After hemming it and taking it in a bit, I had a versatile piece that I found I could stretch throughout the year.

spring

For spring I made the dress into a shirt and paired it with some high-waisted bell bottoms, a light cardigan, and some chunky wedges.

summer

In Utah, summer means months on months of 100-degree heat, so I like to keep my outfits as simple as humanly possible. This dress is perfect for summer because you can just pair it with a floppy hat and some sandals and feel like a summer sassypants.

autumn

Fall is my favorite season for one thing and one thing only--the triumphant resurgence of tights! Fall tends to be pretty warm in Utah, so I just pair it with some red nylons, moccs, and a short-sleeved cardigan.

winter

And for winter, it's all about layers. I just layered a mustard granny sweater over the dress for a different look and a belt to give it shape. Add some tall cowboy boots for warmth, and you're set for a chilly day.

Remixing vintage pieces is definitely one of my favorite things to do. What's your go-to trick for getting the most out of your vintage pieces?

And if you're a diehard thrifter like Sandi and I, be sure to stop by and visit my blog! I do a weekly feature called $5 Thrifty Thursday where I showcase a treasure I found for $5 and under. I'm always highlighting reader finds as well, so if you've got something, send it on over! I'd love to feature you there.

Have fun keeping it real and keeping it vintage, champs!

a much needed day away

.
yesterday, tuesday, i had a day away with my co-workers as we traveled to the kearney farm. it was lovely, the weather was fabulous and it was much needed trip for myself and fellow friends. i stepped away from my 9-5 day on the computer and went back to the basics of working with my hands. i made some necklaces but do you wanna see what else i made? look down bottom. i was a great way for me to collect myself as i've been having a bit on my plate recently and trying to process it all. needless to say this day away was awesome! i tneed to do this kinda thing more often. so how was your tuesday? did you grab yourself a free mushroom desktop yet?

Around the Yard + Free Desktop

.

Around our yard there are a bunch of animals, tree's, bushes, bugs, plants, weeds and occasionally mushrooms! These oh so tiny mushrooms were just to cute not to share. I don't see them too often around our yard, but when it rains, little clumps of them pop up to say hello! I'm taking a break from todays Take Ten Tuesdays. I hope you have a nice Tuesday and below is a free desktop, if you'd like a little picture of mushrooms for yourself.
