Nicole's Fav Fives // Equestrian

"Hi Adalou readers, Nicole from Pussycat Vintage here with a new twist on an old series! My monthly "Fav Five Series" will always be centered around a look. I will take a look that is trending, classic or that I just absolutely love and show you five pieces I think would look amazing together. I hope that this series will be fun and maybe give you some new shops to check out, looks to try or spark some sort of inspiration in your own wardrobe. This month I chose an equestrian look. It is a classic fall trend that I am in love with. It might also have something to do with the fact that I used to ride and show equestrian. Hehehe. Thank you for stopping by and taking a look! Be sure to check out Sandi's awesome Fav Five series on the PCV blog. Hope you have a wonderful day!"

my mister cooks // chocolate black-bottom pie

We enjoyed not one but 3 Thanksgiving day desserts. This one was by far my favorite though.
What sweets or dessert did you enjoy!

Approx Time 4 Hours (due to chill times) // Serves 6-8

3 1/4 cups heavy cream
8 ounces semisweet chocolate, chopped
1 tablespoon of spiced rum (we used captain morgan)
1 cookie pie crust (we bought the oreo pie crust)
1/2 cup toasted macadamia nuts, coarsely chopped
2 tablespoons or confectioners' sugar

1.) In a medium microwave safe bowl, heat 1 1/4 cups of cream until hot, approx 3 minutes. Add chocolate and let stand until melted, approx 5-10 minutes. Whisk to combine, then whisk in rum. Pour 1 1/2 cups of chocolate mixture into pie crust and reserve the rest for topping later (we stuck ours in the fridge for the next day). Sprinkle nuts over top. Refrigerate pie 3 hours // or up to 2 days (we did ours overnight).

2.) In a large bowl, use and electric mixer, beat 2 cups cream with sugar on high until stiff peaka form, approx 2 minutes. Top pie with whipped cream. Reheat chocolate mixture and with a skewer, gently swirl chocolate through whipped cream. * We made the topping and then chilled ours until after dinner, so for 5 more hours. But I'm sure it would be tasty right away too!

Hour by Hour // Turkey Day 2011

Last week we celebrated Thanksgiving with our little family plus the misters siblings which live here. We hosted it at our home, and the mister graciously cooked almost everything but 2 dishes which my SIL kindly brought over. Our small family has a great connection for the holidays but we surely all missed the rest of our families but from we heard they all enjoyed some yumminess and were missing us too. Hope you all had a great Holiday and that you enjoy a peek into our Turkey day adventures.
p.s. I'll blogging that Chocolate pie recipe (dessert 6pm photo) next ;)

mini collections : vintage cameras

My fascination with vintage cameras (an photography items) sparked about 7 years back when we lived in Atlanta. I'm no photographer, so I don't really need them per say but I've alway thought that they looked so cool. A co-worker at the time, had a few beautiful camera's collection on her desk which I loved to admire from afar. Months later she announced she was going to relocate for a new job, and when she began to pack up her desk, she graciously sorted the cameras into a box and then made her way over to me and handed me my very first camera. She had known I really loved them and would appreciate it, and then proceeded to tell me about how this one she was gifting me was part of her grandmothers personal collection. Wow did I feel so special at the time. Over the years, I've slowly acquired my own special collection, each with it's own story in some way, shape or form. Currently I'm at 13 cameras, plus 2 vintage movie projectors. One of the projects is so special to me as my BIL, living in NJ at the time spotted a large box out on the curb for trash day. I'm glad he stopped to look and see what it was cause this old box was the case holding my cherished Bell & Howell 8mm which proudly sits atop our tv stand today. Do your personal collections have special meanings or stories behind them? Happy mini collection Mondays!

3 DIY Lace Projects (link love)

Hope you're having a nice weekend, and if you celebrated Thanksgiving then I hope you've had a nice holiday, long weekend to relax and enjoy time with family! I wanted to share 3 DIY link loves (not my diy's but ones worth noting) which I spotted out there recently. These projects are all on my to do list. I don't think I can pick a favorite among the 3, I just know the mug would be a great piece for my collection. I'm always looking for pretty vases, and those tiles, well we are redoing the kitchen very soon and maybe I can convince the mister that we need some of these. Hope your days happy!

A Love Story // Guest Post from Caitlin

Hi Adalou readers! Sandi asked me to write a guest post and I am happy to oblige. I love her, her awesome shop and her fabulous blog! I blog over at To Make Love Stay about my life with my husband, Rob, our dog, Cypress, and various things that capture my fancy on a semi-daily basis.

A lot of what I write has to do with marriage and our life now that my husband is out of the Army and back from a combat deployment to Iraq. Today I really wanted to share with you our love story. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I do! :)

Rob and I met in high school. We're from a really small area, and had tons of connections that we had never realized. For example, his stepmother was my sister's kindergarten teacher, and his father, a physician, at one point worked with my mother, a nurse.

Rob was in a band and was madly in love with a girl. Nobody knew who she was because he was very tight-lipped about it. He would write her these beautiful songs and sang them with his band (spoiler alert: it wasn't me...we hadn't met yet!). One day I went to go see the band play. I met the band and long story short, I started dating the bassist. We were together for 2 months, but throughout that entire time Rob and I would talk for hours online, and would frequently talk about how we wanted to hang out without my bassist boyfriend around. He even confessed to me who "mystery girl" was after about 2 weeks of knowing each other. He was not an overly trusting person but knew that he could trust me.

One night in December we were talking online and he told me that though he could tell me everything, he had one secret he could not share. I kept asking what it was, and told him that I had a “secret” too. Eventually I confessed my feelings, which he clearly reciprocated. I broke up with my boyfriend the next day, talked to Rob for literally hours, and he told me that he loved me. The first time we ever held hands we cried together and I could literally see his heart beating through his shirt (whoa teenagers). A few weeks later was our first Valentine's Day. As a surprise Rob sang me a song he had written for me in front of our entire high school cafeteria. If you know Rob you know that he is extremely shy, and this was huge for him. Of course I collapsed into dramatic tears amongst the jealous sighs of my classmates, and all I could see or hear was him. It was lovely.

We spent the next year and a half in young-love-bliss until he left for the Army, which I had known was his dream since childhood. I skipped school on April 13, 2004 and we had our last full, non-Army day together. On April 14, he went to Basic Training, and from then until July we only communicated through letters and two 3-minute phone calls. On the weekend of July 4, I traveled to Georgia to visit him for a 30 hour pass. 30 hours seemed like forever after being apart so long, but was gone in an instant. After Basic and Airborne School, he was then stationed in Anchorage, AK while I went to college in Wisconsin.

As we were too young to get married, we stayed together without tying the knot for the next four years. I was in college so we only saw each other every 2-3 months or so. I think the longest amount of consecutive time we spent together at a time was 2 weeks. This went on until 2006, when he left for Iraq. He was there during one of the bloodiest times in the war, and he was on the front lines (MOS 11B - Infantry for you military folk) which did him no favors. He was shot and was involved in several IED explosions, but miraculously survived. Rob was in quite a few dangerous situations but always made it out relatively unscathed, a fact that he owes to the existence of a tiny stuffed raccoon that I had given him early in the relationship. I had been given the raccoon when I was 4 and in the hospital with a tumor in my kidney. He carried her with him always and to this day swears that he'd be dead if he didn't have her (and, by proxy, me) with him always. He even got a tattoo of the raccoon, named Elizabeth.

In May 2008 I graduated college and he got out of the army forever. We have lived together in happiness and love since. Rob began his postsecondary education, only a few years late, and is studying Environmental Science. He will graduate in May 2012. On Valentine's Day 2009 he sang me a song in our living room (reminiscent of our first Valentine's Day) and proposed to me. Very clearly I said yes, and we had the wedding of our dreams on July 10, 2010.

I feel extremely fortunate to have met and married my best friend. For Rob and I, staying together was never a question or a doubt. My relationship with my husband has always come easily to me, the only thing I'm totally sure of in my life aside from my family. When I look back on what we've gone through and how it strengthened us, I am filled with pride, love and happiness.

Thanks to Sandi for letting me share this with you! Have a wonderful day!

food // cream cheese pancakes

Most of our meals are prepared by the mister. But sweets and breakfast foods are my all time favorite thing to make. I love whipping up french toast, pancakes or eggs. And we all especially love eating breakfast for dinners, like these tasty cream cheese pancakes were highly enjoyed. And for all my gluten free friends out there, this special recipe is perfect for you! Happy eating!  What's your favorite breakfast food?

Makes approx. 20+ half dollar size (3") pancakes

1 (8oz) package of cream cheese softened
4 eggs, separated
1/2 teaspoon of sugar
1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg
veggie oil for the griddle

1.) In medium bowl mix cream cheese, egg yolks, sugar, cinnamon & nutmeg until well blended.
Mixture may be slightly lumpy, this is ok. 2.) In another bowl, using an electric mixer, beat egg whites until stiff and forming peaks. I used my food processor, this seems to be much faster. 3.) Add egg white to cream cheese mixture, mixing well. This may look very soupy. 4.) Lightly oil griddle or frying pan and place on medium heat. Add small dollops to form 3" mini pancakes. Please note that because there is no flour, then the mixture is more soupy, which doesn't hold well with larger pancakes, so smaller ones work best. You may try larger ones but be warned that your pancake when flipping may break apart; they'll still taste fantastic though. Serve with syrup or powdered sugar. We feel they are already sweet enough and we eat them plain. Enjoy!

mini collections : owl figurines

Hello friends! Hope your weekend was fabulous! I won't complain about mine, but let's just say I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed today as I worked all weekend (9+ hour days) at the office because we are swamped with meeting deadlines before the turkey day holidays. And boy am I pooped and ready for Wednesday...

Todays mini collection is displayed in our hallway near all the bedrooms in our home. Lately I've loved owls and though my collection of them is only a mere 4 at the moment, it's still a collection, right? The brass ones were all found on various thrifting adventures and the awesome ceramic one was purchased online over on etsy (by a seller who's since closed there shop, so sad). Owls seem to be popular lately and I'm always on the hunt for more little friends to add to the flock; they'll surely need a bigger shelf though :)  What's your favorite animal?  Happy Mini Collections Monday!
